Mixing and Mastering in Logic Pro X: A Musician’s Guide

Discover expert mixing tips for Logic Pro X with musician Ryan Doyle. Learn how to master mixing techniques, and level up your music production!

Introduction

What do your favourite radio tunes have in common? What helps them on their way to becoming an earworm, a song that is played everywhere you go, a song that everyone knows? They all have quality mixing and mastering!

If you’re an aspiring musician, you may be wondering which mixing software is the best suited for you?

I spoke with Ryan Doyle, musician behind the song back2me, to find out why he loves Logic Pro X! Ryan mixes and masters all of his songs (and songs for other artists) in Logic Pro X, his music has a pop vibe that makes you want to get up and dance!

Ryan Doyle has told me his thoughts on Logic Pro X, how to set up your Logic Pro workspace, and where to start when mixing songs. I'm here to give you the best Logic Pro X mixing tips.

A Q&A With A Musician

1. Why Choose Logic Pro X for Mixing & Mastering?

Experience in Logic Pro X has given Ryan insights into how it holds up against other music production software. One of Logic’s biggest pros, according to Ryan, is that 'the UI [user-interface] is friendlier!'

Beginner friendly interfaces are a big plus to the Logic software—it creates a low-stakes, non-intimidating environment that allows users to discover things through trial and error!

'Another pro for Logic is that it’s more affordable', says Ryan, not only is there a one time payment as opposed to a subscription, but Logic Pro X also boasts 'a number of built in mixing tools that you don’t have to pay extra for, other competitors probably have those behind a paywall so they’re less accessible.'

So, if you’re a beginner looking to explore the world of mixing and mastering, or if you’re a seasoned pro looking for alternative software, Logic Pro X could be a great option for you.

2. Expert Mixing Tips for Logic Pro X Users

'Create templates and utilise them,' says Ryan, 'once you’ve found a workflow that makes sense for you, make it into a template so that when you open up Logic again you can select the template and just get stuck in!'

When it’s time for mixing, Ryan says that the 'window can go fullscreen, you don’t have to look at the project as a whole, you can just focus on mixing. This really gives you the feel of an old-school mixing desk!'

3. Setting Up Your Logic Pro X Workspace Efficiently

Ryan’s big recommendation?

Starting with a reference track.

'Take a song that you really like, that has been really successful in the market that you want to break into and import it into Logic—then reference against it as much as you can!'

It’s about understanding the quality, and overall sound of the level that you are trying to compete at. 'If your mix doesn’t stand up to your competitors then it will fall flat,' Ryan says, 'if it were to be in a playlist or sandwiched between tracks that are at a certain level then it will become really noticeable.'

After all, 'no one will listen to your track in a vacuum!'

Conclusion

So, Ryan’s top mixing and mastering tips are:

  1. Create workspace templates to improve your workflow.
  2. When it comes to mixing, go old-school and focus solely on the mixing side.
  3. Get a reference track to remind you of the level your competitors are at.
